Welcome to Muttontown

Muttontown, located in the Town of Oyster Bay on Long Island’s North Shore, has a rich history dating back to the early 17th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native Americans before European settlers arrived in the 1600s. Early European settlers established farms and grew crops, with the area becoming known for its agricultural potential.

In the 18th century, the region saw the development of several large estates, as wealthy families moved to the North Shore in search of a quieter, more rural lifestyle. The name “Muttontown” is believed to have originated from the early presence of sheep farms in the area, with "mutton" referring to the meat of sheep.

By the late 19th century, Muttontown attracted a wealthy population, and many prominent New York City families established large country estates. The community became part of Long Island’s “Gold Coast”, a region known for its opulent mansions and estates during the early 20th century. Muttontown itself was incorporated as a village in 1967, and over the years, the area has maintained its reputation as an exclusive residential community.

Today, Muttontown is known for its spacious estates, historical properties, and natural beauty. The village preserves much of its rural character, with large lots and green spaces, while offering residents proximity to both nature and the conveniences of nearby towns like Oyster Bay and East Norwich.
